NEW RESOURCE GIVES TEACHERS PRACTICAL WAYS TO CONFRONT BULLYING

Chicago, IL   (September 16, 2008) -- RaceBridges For Schools, a nonprofit initiative that offers free lesson plans to promote non-violence and non-discrimination, has created a new resource to help teachers confront bullying in the classroom.

New Words: A Resource for Addressing Bullying at School is the newest offering from RaceBridges For Schools, an organization that gives teachers tools to build stronger and more inclusive communities. Geared toward high school students, this new resource provides a series of exercises for teachers and students to address bullying by taking a stand, telling the truth, and acting compassionately.

Designed for use in a classroom, school organization, or for a teacher in-service day, “New Words” can be used with any group of people interested in raising awareness of bullying and techniques for intervention. These anti-bullying tools are intended to catalyze a conversation, draw on the shared knowledge of the group and to develop personal methods based on core values.

This Teacher tool will:

  • Provide a method for introducing and discussing a challenging topic
  • Encourage teachers and students to take responsibility for the social climate at school in safe and effective ways
  • Raise awareness of stereotypes and other bias-related behaviors
  • Create an environment for participants to discuss and reflect on how bullying impacts their daily lives at school
  • Identify some core values
  • Identify and practice effective ways to intervene
  • Encourage empathy for the targets of bullying

RaceBridges For Schools seeks to increase interracial understanding and cooperation by developing Web programming that affirms human dignity and equality. Units on a variety of classroom themes.
